What's the best way to remove paint off wood furniture?

I'm trying to decide if I need to use a chemical strip to remove a the paint from a wood study desk and chair or if simply sanding off the paint would save me time and still give me a nice finish? I'll repaint the furniture as apposed to staining so I'm wondering which would be the best way to go. Any input from seasoned redecorators would be appreciated. What's the best way to remove paint off wood furniture?
It would depend on how many coats and what type of paint is already on there. If it is paint and not stain that is already there and there is only one coat you could just scuff up the old stuff with a fine sand paper and just paint over it. If it is stain or if it has more that one coat you will want to use a stripper. Using a chemical stripper is so much faster. Just make sure to get a good stripper. The cheap stuff just doesn't cut it most of the time. The person at you local paint/hardware store should be able to help you find the best stripper for your application. If you do use stripper you will still need to do some light sanding to smooth up surfaces give the furniture a nice clean look. What's the best way to remove paint off wood furniture?

use the cheimicals. they are so much faster and eseyier
You can sand it off. It takes time but the wood can look great afterwards.

You can use chemical peelers. They smell very, they are messy, they are terrible for the environment. But some work very good. Of course some don't work very good. Spend the money on a good one if you are going this way. Have lots of ventilation too.

I think there are some machines too that use heat to strip wood as well.
If your going to repaint the piece of furniture and its not that big Sanding it with a power sander would be your best choice,Paint stripers can be very messy if your carful.with then. If you do decide to use stripper make sure you do it out side or in a very well ventalated area like your garage. Its not a good idia to do in your house because paint stripper is powerful stuff and before you know it your stripping the floors and other pieces of furniture that you dont want stripped
I would try and sand it before I went with a chemical strip. Maybe a palm sander or a belt sander if you need a little more power.
If you're going to repaint it then all you need to do is a light sanding- just enough to scratch it up. then just wipe it down and repaint.

if you decide to stain it, then you'll probably need to chemically strip it (at least that is the easiest way I've found) . there is a chemical called QRB that works really well. Good luck!
Homer Formby's wood products are the best. They are really easy and give great results.
