My bf has tried to paint our living room red, the people at the paint store said to use pink primer and gave us the one they suggested, when we painted though the red came out really blotchy and messy... it didn't come out right at all.. One of our friends said to try an oil based primer, or gray primer, any tips on how we can get it on smoothly and evenly? How can you paint your walls red properly?
I painted my dining room red, i had to use 2 coats of white primer which i mixed with a little of the actual paint, 2 coats did a perfect job of covering . i bought the best paint i could afford and it worked out just fine. 1 coat of primer, let it completely dry, sand down the bumps and imperfections, then paint the walls, let the paint really dry between coats. i know it's a lot of work but it is your home. it took me a whole week end to do it and i'm 63 years young, if you have help even better. the hardest part is prepping the walls. get some good brushes and a good roller, it really helps. good luck and hope your space looks as good as mine. How can you paint your walls red properly?
I have 4-ft paneling in the guest bath...painted it with Sherwin Williams ';Rave Red,'; #SW6608 -- a sort of medium dark crimson. Store manager gave me a gray undercoat. The red is oil base. I think the gray was Latex. Anyway, looks great.
Different reds may require slightly different undercoat. I don't know. If you have a Sherwin Williams store handy, take them a sample of your red, see what they say. And check out the oil vs. Latex.
How many coats did you put on? Oftentimes, even though you use a red primer, you'll need to do at least 3 coats of red paint on top of your primer for the red to look nice. The thinner and more liquid the paint is, the more coats you'll need. Try another coat or two.
thats odd. i would think it would come out nicely. Ithinkyou should try an oil based primer. did you wait for the layer to dry? hmm, strange. wellgoodluck sweetie

when you use a primer you need to make sure you let the primer dry thoroughly, after it is dry use a regular brush to do egdges around corners and such, then get a good quality roller to do the walls.
Did you stir the paint? Did you apply 2 coats? Did you wait for the primer to dry? Were the walls clean to begin with?
Red is a hard color to paint on walls. You need to use the W method of painting and spread the paint from that. It will probably take another coat or two.
Primer should be tinted the same shade as the paint. Use eggshell finish paint. Put on two coats of a good quality (such as Behr) paint. It should turn out lovely! Add some dark brown accents in the room. Nice!
primer then the red paint
With a paintbrush..!
