I was looking for opinions on whether or not it is worth spending the money for high quality paint (e.g. Benjamin Moore). It costs almost 3x as much as the basic brands I can buy at Lowe's or Home Depot.
If I go for the good stuff, will it look better, last longer, or both? Will the differences be obvious?
In the near future, I will also be painting my dining room, kitchen, etc. What quality of paint to use in my living room?
Several years ago a noted consumer magazine tested paint and WalMart came in as the best buy. Then they had a side panel that said ';If durability and ease of application are important'; In that panel it listed Benny Moore, Pittsburgh and Pratt and Lambert all 3x as much or more than the WalMart and all in eggshell finish. Are you a long term thinker who cannot overlook an irregular looking job because it saved you money? If you are, think ';durability and ease of application';.What quality of paint to use in my living room?
At wal mart they have a brand called KILZ, it used to only come in white and it was used to cover water stains and mask odors and it is a wonder paint, well now they tint it and it is realy inexpensive and at around $20 a gallon and it comes in an easy pour container with a nice twist off lid it is very convenient. They have a lot of realy nice colors and it covers in one coat.
For the most part you won't notice a difference.
The most important thing is to properly prep your walls before you start painting. Take care of any imperfections, and get any patchwork sanded smooth.
The other nice thing about the inexpensive paint, is that you can do two (or more) coats without breaking the bank.
Have fun!!
the best paint for walls that will look the best and last the longest is Sherwin williams Duration satin finish for the living room and dining room for the kitchen and any bathrooms I would use Duration semi-gloss. As for lowes they used sherwin williams paint to paint their store so you can see what they think of their own paint. No matter what you use you will get what you pay for. Cheaper paint doesnt last long and is harder to remove spots from. You wont notice the difference in the begining but as time goes by it will be obvious. good luck:)
I've used both Benjamin Moore and Behr paint. Both are excellent paints that give good coverage. I prefer the Behr from Home Depot because it is much less expensive.
I also am a painting contractor and I work in the luxury home market and I highly reccomend the pricier paints, you will get more mileage from them they will not chalk or sunfade as bad a sthe cheaper ones, they will be more durable and most importantly ,they will touch up better ,I use pratt and lampert accolade and benny moore regal for my main wall paints ,Valspar also makes a very good paint ,and is a little less expensive.
I find that you usually get what you pay for. Good paint covers better, and in many cases depending on what color you are painting or painting over, will only require one coat. When I say good paint, I mean the kind that costs over $20.00. I don't think it's necessary to spend over $25.00 to get a good can of paint, but I wouldn't spend less than $20.00. As far as looks, cheap paint is chalky looking and not usually washable. (My ';source'; is experience in painting and repainting every room in my house for the last 25 years.)
