I want to paint the wooden front door of my hundred year old home creatively. Any suggestions?

I have a front porch so the door would not be in the elements. I would love to make it pretty and inviting. It has 4 glass window panes in the top of it.I want to paint the wooden front door of my hundred year old home creatively. Any suggestions?

First of all, sand all of the old paint or varnish so that the surface is smooth. You might be suprised to find that if it was painted, it may look great with just the old paint sanded down somewhat. If so, just put a coat of satin oil based polyurathane over it and you are done. If not, go to your local paint store (Mine is Benjamin Moore) and look at their historic colors. Pick one that you love. Either remove the hardware or tape everything off. Primer first, with oil based KILZ, and apply two coats of good exterior acrylic paint.

I do not reccomend using the glass tint from a craft store. It can not be cleaned and will come off. If you want colored glass, look in your yellow pages under ';stained glass'; and hire a stained glass artist to replace the glass. It will cost about $200 a square foot.
The front door should be the most welcoming part of the house so use a color that ';pop'; and brings attention to it. If you know the architectural style and age of the house, do a little research and find out what paint colors were used at the time the house was built.
Well, what are some of your interests? What do you like? You could paint a picture of something you really like to do, such as play a musical instrument, or play a sport. Maybe do some sort of pattern or design. You could paint it with one or more pretty colors that look good together, and then hang something on the front of a door, like a wreath or something. My mother always hangs something on the front door according to the time of year. Around Christmas, she hangs a cool stuffed Santa. Around Easter, she hangs a bunny. Also, you could additionally make your entrance to your home look nice by putting pretty details around the door, such as flower pots and ceramic crafts.
Go to a big paint place, Lowe's or Home depot and look for reproduction paints, the colors of that bygone era, then select something pleasing to the eye and get after it. I envy you that wonderful old place.
First of all, if your home is one hundred years old, before you do anything to it, you need to check with your city bylaws. In some places, your home would be considered a historic home and you can only paint it according to certain bylaws protecting history. If that is the case, you must abide by the laws or pay the hefty fines. The city will know and you will have guidelines to follow if it is in fact considered a historic home.

If it isn't, it would be best to follow the basic architecture of the home. By that, I mean if the home is a country home, you wouldn't want to decorate your door in a contemporary way... it just wouldn't look right.

Have you considered painting the glass panes with glass paint? That could be quite inviting... You can find pebeo glass paint at any craft store.

If you tell us more about your home, it'll be easier to give you suggestions....
I WOULD PAINT IT LIKE A CASTLE DOOR. IF YOUR DOOR IS LIKE I'M THINKING WITH VERTICAL PLANKS BISCUITED TOGETHER.
