Just out of curiosity...are you changing the look of appliances? I know dishwashers can be re-skinned to come close to a decorating theme. Probably more expensive than a few cans of paint but absolutely professional. Contact the manufacturer.
Have you checked into powder coating? Just do a local google search for powder coating in your area.
I've had this problem before and I used steel wool to scuff stainless steel and then painted.
