What is the best kind of paint to paint over dark ugly wood paneling with?????

My boyfriends mom has this dark ugly wood paneling all over her house. He just found wood floors underneath the brown crap that was on the floor and refinished them and it looks really nice, until you see that walls. now it is dark and dreary. ANyone have any tips on painting wood paneling so it doesn't look fugly??What is the best kind of paint to paint over dark ugly wood paneling with?????
The folks recommending Kilz are correct. It is the best primer for this sort of thing. I've done this many times. I would add that you can get the Kilz primer tinted to match the color you are going to paint after priming. Wish I had done that- would save a lot of time + coats of final paint color if you are going to something that is significantly different than the white of the untinted Kilz.

I would just leave the grooves rather than fill them in- way too much work if you have much of an area to do. Use the lines provided by the grooves to do a paint technique- like stripes. It can be very subtle- you can just use the same color throughout + just vary the type of finish i.e. eggshell and semigloss. Gives a nice textural effect with almost no effort.

Also- there is a product that can be applied to walls that preps them for wall paper- It looks just like wall paper but is a little thicker- I believe it is called wallpaper liner. No need to fill in grooves. Ask about it at your local paint /wallpaper supplier.

Paint those walls!!! you will be glad. What is the best kind of paint to paint over dark ugly wood paneling with?????
Prime the wall with Kilz first and then paint with any latex paint you wish.
You will have to put a good primer on the walls first, then just paint with a semi gloss paint, they will be easy to clean...you can also wallpaper over paneling if you prime first, you can fill in the cracks with dry wall mud, the easiest way to do this and save yourself some sanding time is to put painters tape on each side of the paneling grooves apply the mud let dry and sand then remove the tape. You can get allot of nice affects with this, you can leave the lower paneling the wood color and put up a chair rail and wallpaper the top half of the walls .

Good Luck
Use a product call Killz. It's used to cover stains, but works great for covering up dark wood. It goes on like paint. You will need to apply a couple of coats, then paint over that with any other color your choose. I've used it on dark woodwork in my home.

Good luck!
